THE CHALLENGES

Challenges that halt production lines

Manufacturing networks must simultaneously support real-time machine control, operator communications, quality systems, and ERP integration — without any tolerance for latency or downtime.

Machine Networks Siloed From ERP

When CNC machines, quality control systems, and ERP cannot share real-time data, production planning relies on manual data entry — creating errors, delays, and inability to implement real predictive maintenance.

Network Latency Stops Automated Lines

Robotic assembly cells and automated guided vehicles require sub-millisecond network responses. Consumer or standard enterprise WiFi introduces variable latency that causes robotic control dropouts and line stoppages.

Metal Structures Create WiFi Shadows

Metal machinery, storage racks, and overhead cranes create RF shadow zones that interrupt AGV navigation, barcode scanner connectivity, and tablet-based quality inspection tools.

IT Threats Reach OT Systems

WannaCry and similar ransomware attacks have physically damaged manufacturing equipment by reaching SCADA systems through improperly segmented IT/OT networks. OT isolation is a physical safety requirement.

THE SOLUTIONS

One platform. Every machine connected.

INALAMBRICA.US designs OT/IT converged networks for smart manufacturers — from single-plant deployments to multi-facility Industry 4.0 transformations.

OT/IT Network Separation

Industrial automation networks (OT) are isolated from business systems (IT) using hardware VLAN separation. Only specific data points (production counts, quality metrics) are bridged from OT to IT through controlled data interfaces.

THE BUSINESS CASE

Infrastructure that unlocks Industry 4.0 potential.

30-50% Reduction in Unplanned Downtime

Predictive maintenance enabled by real-time machine telemetry collected over the plant network reduces unplanned stoppages. Connected machines expose failure signatures hours before physical breakdowns — enabling intervention before production impact.

Production Systems Protected From Ransomware

OT/IT separation means a ransomware attack on business systems (email, ERP) physically cannot reach production PLCs and SCADA systems. Zero production shutdowns from cybersecurity incidents for INALAMBRICA.US-deployed clients.

ERP Integration Without Manual Data Entry

Real-time machine connectivity eliminates manual production count entry, quality inspection transcription, and paper-based tracking. Manufacturers report 80-90% reduction in production data entry labor after Industry 4.0 network deployments.

When we deployed UniFi on the production floor, we connected 400 machines to our MES in 90 days. Our OEE improved from 68% to 81% in the first quarter because we could finally see where time was being lost. The network investment paid for itself in one quarter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

UniFi switches support all standard Ethernet-based industrial protocols including PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and OPC-UA by providing the underlying network infrastructure. These protocols require specific network design considerations — dedicated VLANs, multicast configuration, and QoS priority — that INALAMBRICA.US configures as part of every industrial deployment. For fieldbus protocols requiring protocol conversion, we integrate with industrial Ethernet gateways.

On a properly configured UniFi OT VLAN with QoS priority and DSCP marking, we consistently measure round-trip latency of 0.5-2ms for OT traffic. This is sufficient for all mainstream robotic control applications and most real-time machine control scenarios. For applications requiring <100 microsecond deterministic latency (specific servo controllers), we recommend Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) capable switches in place of standard UniFi switches for the immediate machine connections.

Complete hardware VLAN separation between IT and OT networks makes ransomware propagation from IT to OT physically impossible — there is no routed path between network segments. The only communication crossing the IT/OT boundary passes through a controlled data interface (typically an OPC-UA server or data diode) that we configure to pass only specific approved data types in one direction. This architecture has been validated against the attack vectors used in the Industroyer and WannaCry industrial incidents.

Yes — quality inspection tablets are placed on a secure mobile device VLAN with WPA3 encryption and 802.1X authentication. Fast roaming (802.11r/k/v) ensures inspectors moving around the production floor never experience disrupted connections when transitioning between access points. The quality VLAN has appropriate QoS policies and access controls to reach quality management systems while being isolated from OT machine networks.

We plan manufacturing network installations to minimize production disruption. Infrastructure work (cable runs, equipment room setup) is performed during planned shutdown or maintenance windows. AP mounting and switch connections at individual workstations are sequenced with production scheduling. We use a phased cutover approach — the new network operates in parallel with existing infrastructure until fully validated before any traffic migrates.
